BOHEMIAN CARNIVAL Indie Circus & Music Showcase

Friday, June 11, 2010
9pm to 3am

CELLspace
2050 Bryant St.
San Francisco, CA

Follow this watch with your eyes...you're getting sleepy...veeeery sleepy.............

Now repeat after me:

On June 11, 2010, there will be nothing more important in my world than making my way to Bohemian Carnival. I will make sure I won't miss it by buying advance tickets at http://www.bohemiancarnival.net/.

On June 11, 2010, I will feel very confident...confident that I've told everyone I possibly could that their moral directive was to meet me at Bohemian Carnival.

On June 11, 2010, I will hereby run away with the circus for the duration of 6 hours or more, my problems will be consumed by bliss, and my friends and I will have one of the finest times of our independent and collective lives, indulging in the likes of my hosts:

GOOFERMAN, the renowned kings of klown-fi band and microcircus
and
VAU DE VIRE SOCIETY, the acclaimed avant cabaret supersexy circus

...and I will lose my skull to their fine-feathered friends:

SUPER GEEK LEAGUE, Seattle's epic punk sci-fi punk circus

SMOOVE, the award-winning super-bump beat DJ

ANGELO MOORE, bombastic lead singer of Fishbone, sitting in with KENO MAPP and GOOFERMAN

THE FOSSETTES, lovely purveyors of cabaret and burlesque

SWALLOW KEY, the mad scientist master of maniacal musics

COWBOY GIRLS, the daringly delightful daredevils of the pow-pow

LINDSAY BENNER, sensational sweetheart of a million talents

SISTERS OF HONK, the red-nosed essence of sexysilly

KINGFISH, main Master of any and all Ceremonies

The astonishing wonderlandian art of LEE HARVEY ROSWELL (painting live as well) and COOPER HAZEN, and the fantastical photography of BEN WESTER

(and I will find links to each of these on http://www.bohemiancarnival.net/)

....

It will only cost me $20 to enjoy this whole steamy mess, and I must bring my ID proving I'm 21 or older.

I will not awake from this hypnotic episode until sometime on the morning of June 12, at which point I will float through my weekend like gravity barely exists. And when I do awake, I'll remember to join the Bohemian Carnival group on Facecrack, and I'll feel an eternal trickle-to-gush of psychosomatic joy. Amen.

SoulFire - 2010 Burning Man Regional Event, June 11-13th

Just 20 minutes from Santa Cruz and San Jose, one hour south of San Francisco & Oakland, and 2 hours from Santa Rosa or Sacramento, we're very happy to invite you to the 4th Annual Precompression in the redwoods, SoulFire! Yes, the Southbay, Santa Cruz, and Eastbay burner communities are uniting again in the Los Gatos hills to bring you three days and two nights of community, dance, art, performances, drummers, musicians, theme camps, random acts of radical self-expression, and more. As a Burning Man Regional Event, this gathering is for the entire community. Participants are encouraged to embrace the 10 Principles of Burning Man as they "bring it" to SoulFire!

Gear up for the playa, do some practice CAMPING (shake the dust out of your tent, test your air mattress, see how warm your playa coat really is!), PARTICIPATE in the creation of a playa-rific experience for everyone who attends. Want to DJ? Practice your POI SPINNING performance? Have a new ART project or EL WIRE creation you’d like to show off? Come to give to your community and BE DELIGHTED by your fellow participants! If you're coming to the Bay Area for the 25th anniversary festivities, this is a great way to start the week off right.

We've got quite a roster of theme camps and activities so far, including:

Asian Gong Welcoming Ceremony on Friday night * Den of Iniquity * FrankenAnimal Craft Lab * Welcoming Tea & Cookies in the Goddess Circle * Ongoing film and slide shows, including a fully restored version of Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis” * Arts & Crafts for kids of all ages * Burning Man photo exhibit * Sunshine’s Pole Dancing Olympics * Peace Dome Paintings * Solar Demonstrations * Naked Twister * 2010 Virgin Workshop * Gomer Hendrix, LIVE! * Pleasures of the Flesh University * Stationary art cars * Bocci balls * Nature Walk * Mother Goose on the Loose * Ping Pong * 3 Sound Stages including surfer music by the pool

… and, of course, whatever YOU are bringing (we still need someone to volunteer for Grilled Cheese Sandwich Camp!) If you want to host an activity that will be listed in the What/Where/When, send an email with the subject “Participate” to southbay@burningman.com.

There are still a few opportunities for comps and grants:

ARTISTS – A limited number of Art Grants are available for this year’s SoulFire in the form of comps. If you have large-scale art or an Art Car you’d like to install on the Lupin grounds for the event, send an email today to southbay@burningman.com with the subject “Placement”.

RANGERS/GATE – We welcome your on-playa expertise! We’ve got a need for Rangers and for Gate/Perimeter at SoulFire, so if you’ve got the khaki please let us know! Email southbay@burningman.com with the subject “Volunteer”.

WORK EXCHANGE - Lupin Lodge is offering comps for pre-SoulFire grounds and preparation work. A 6-hour shift in advance is required. Please contact Cindy at Lupin Lodge to make arrangements: 1-408-353-9200.

And, we still have a great need for volunteers of all kinds to help with greeting, parking, leave-no-trace, sign-making, etc. What mad skilz do you have?

THE BURNING MAN FILM FESTIVAL-SAN FRANCISCO

Red Vic Movie House (www.redvicmoviehouse.com)
1727 Haight Street
San Francisco, CA 94117

Get your advanced tickets NOW! See below for a full program and links to
Brown Paper Tickets!

Boasting over 20 short and feature-length films, the Burning Man Film
Festival line-up has been designed to provide a unique “retrospective”
look at the Burning Man event.

Saturday’s program will focus on Burning Man “THEN” through 10 films
that were shot from the years 1991-2004…Our first film of the fest was
made by Larry Harvey himself in 1991! “Nothing Without You” by Ted
Mattison and Paul Kelleher is about a guy who shows up at Burning Man in
nothing but his birthday suit but, through the gift economy in Black
Rock City, finds what he needs to survive plus a whole lot more!
Filmmaker Fernando Valezquez sold his café to fund his film “Where’s the
Fire?” Filmmaker Chuck Cirino’s 1994 film was the first official BM film
for sale and both his 1994 and 1997 films will be screened at 8pm on
Saturday evening!

Saturday night, we invite you to a special MIDNIGHT screening of
Vancouver filmmaker David Vaisbord’s “Juicy Danger Meets Burning Man.”

Sunday’s “NOW” films offer a look at Burning Man through the eyes of
filmmakers who have documented the event and the larger influence the
Burning Man culture has had in the world from 2002 and into the present.
French filmmaker Laurent LeGall’s “Voyage in Utopia” is not to be missed
as the cinematography and editing are combined to make this one of the
most beautiful Burning Man videos ever to be produced! "Folding Time and
Space" by Henrickson & Childs is a fantastic time lapse piece done with
cameras installed near the Man pointed at the city and the Man
continuously over 8 days. The moving “Burn on the Bayou” chronicles the
beginnings of Burners Without Borders and “The Temple Builder” offers a
close look at the life and work of temple artist David Best.

These are but a few highlights of what promises to be a great weekend of
Burning Man films!

Dust off those playa coats, grab your monocles and top hats and join us
at the THEATRE!

Performance Workshop June 19

Burning Man Special Events Team is supporting a number of free, interactive workshops -- by burners for burners -- designed to share the skills and expertise of our community. These workshops are intended to further the principles of gifting and radical self-reliance using tools that are readily available.

Workshop #5 : "How to Create Performance Art for the Playa"
Saturday, June 19, 2010
6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (pre-event workshop)
The Concourse Exhibition Center
635 8th St (enter on 7th St at Brannan)
San Francisco, CA 94103

Dr. Wendy Clupper will lead a workshop entitled: "How to Create Performance Art for the Playa". It will explore the possibilities for creating spontaneous interactive theater at Burning Man. There is a rich history of performance in Burning Man's nearly 25 years and we all can be a part of it! On the playa, you don't need a stage to perform. Burning Man is a cityscape that invites and encourages its own unique street theater. This workshop is for anyone who wants to develop the skills to engage other participants on the playa in both playful and theatrical ways. We will be using theater exercises and techniques in both partners and groups to create solo performances that we can try out at PreCompression and in anticipation of Metropolis. Come participate and discover the playful performer waiting inside you. Wendy is a long-time burner, a performer/director and Professor of Theater History whose dissertation was entitled: The Performance Culture of Burning Man.

This workshop will take place in the two hours prior to PreCompression. Space is limited, must be 21 and over. Reservations required. Please RSVP to Terry Penn helpishere@sbcglobal.net .

2010 Black Rock City Film Festival: Call For Entries

At this year’s Burning Man, the people behind the Boston Underground Film Festival and San Francisco IndieFest have joined together to form a new film festival that will take place during the event.

It’s the Black Rock City Film Festival and they’re looking for short films to screen for the residents of the temporary city that forms each summer in the Black Rock desert.

The festival will run on Aug. 31 to Sep. 3 and will begin with a Red Carpet Opening Night Gala before the first screening on Tuesday and end with a Wrap Party on Friday after the last film has been screened. Plus, there will be beer and cocktails each night before and between screenings at the camp's Casting Couch Bar.

Just to be clear: BRCFF is not necessarily looking for films ABOUT Burning Man. You can submit any ol’ short film you have — as long as it’s under 30 minutes long. They just want short films in general that will appeal to the mad, wild crowd that converges on Black Rock City every year. Filmmakers with work in the festival are also invited to camp with fest organizers and their fellow makers!

Here are the deadlines for submitting:
Regular Deadline:
July 1

Late Dateline:
July 15
